Dr. Timothy P. Barber

Dr. Barber has unique expertise in machine learning, automated reasoning, and graph algorithms. He has a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Princeton University, and degrees in Philosophy and Physics from the University of Virginia. An accomplished Internet entrepreneur, the companies he founded in his garage in 1998 have total revenues exceeding $2 billion. He's the inventor of device fingerprinting and numerous other technologies that underpin the stability of electronic commerce as we know it today.

Previously he spent seven years as part of an elite federal research group selected to solve some of the most difficult computational problems facing U.S. national security. His current research is in artificial intelligence, and the diagnosis of the algorithms that underlie the human capacity for abstract reasoning.

He has a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from the University of Maryland, and degrees in Mathematics and Physics from the University of Virginia. Prolific as both a scientist and science writer, he is the author of three books, including The Vision Revolution, and Harnessed. His research has been featured in the New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The New Yorker, Forbes, Wired, Discover, Scientific American, and Newsweek.

His interdisciplinary skills have earned him prestigious academic roles in multiple fields, including appointments in Computer Science at University College Cork, Theoretical Neurobiology at Caltech, and Cognitive Science at Rensselaer.
